Burning Smell From Electrical Outlet: Causes, Dangers and What to Do

A burning smell from an electrical outlet should always be taken seriously. This guide explains the most likely causes, what to do in the first few minutes, and how to decide what comes next.

Safety first: what to do right now

If you smell something burning, see smoke, scorch marks or sparks, or the outlet feels hot, act before you try to diagnose anything.

  • Turn off the circuit breaker that powers the outlet, if you can reach the panel safely and your hands are dry.

  • Unplug nothing from a hot or sparking outlet. Cut power at the breaker first.

  • If you see smoke or flames, leave the house and call 911. Do not try to put out an electrical fire with water.

  • Keep the circuit off until a licensed electrician has inspected it.

Common causes of a burning smell from an outlet

Loose or worn connections

Wires that have worked loose behind the outlet create resistance. Resistance makes heat, and heat can melt insulation and the outlet body. This is one of the most common causes and one of the most serious.

An overloaded outlet or power strip

Space heaters, hair dryers and other high-draw appliances can overheat a cord, plug or outlet, especially on a power strip or extension cord. A plastic or fishy smell near a plug often points here.

A damaged plug or appliance

Sometimes the outlet is fine and the device is failing. A bent plug, a frayed cord or a failing motor can all smell like burning. If the smell follows the appliance to another outlet, the appliance is the likely culprit.

Aging or damaged wiring

Older homes can have brittle insulation or outdated outlets that no longer grip plugs firmly. Loose plug fit leads to arcing, which is a spark inside the outlet that you may not see.

What not to do

  • Do not open the outlet or touch the wires yourself unless you are qualified and have confirmed the power is off.

  • Do not keep using the outlet because the smell went away. Heat damage can continue unseen.

  • Do not reset the breaker repeatedly. If it trips again, read our guide to why a circuit breaker keeps tripping.

When it is an emergency and when it can wait

Visible smoke, flames, melted plastic, a hot outlet or repeated sparking is an emergency: leave the area and call 911. A faint smell with no other signs still needs the circuit shut off and a licensed electrician to inspect it. Do not wait for it to get worse.

How WireWise can help

Once the circuit is safely off, it helps to know what you are dealing with before you pay for a service call. Send us photos and a description, and we will explain the probable causes, rough cost ranges and the right next step. For related problems, see our guides on outlets that stopped working and GFCI outlets that keep tripping.

Not sure what is going on with your electrical system? Submit your problem to WireWise and get a written Basic Electrical Diagnostic Report for $29, with probable causes, cost ranges and next steps. It is a first step that helps you know what to ask a licensed electrician. It does not replace an in-person inspection.
