Flickering Lights in House: Causes and When It Is Dangerous

2 min read

Flickering lights in a house can mean something as simple as a loose bulb or as serious as a failing connection at the panel. The pattern of the flicker is your best clue.

Start with the simple causes

  • A loose or worn-out bulb. Turn the light off, let the bulb cool, and check it is seated firmly.

  • An incompatible dimmer. Many LED bulbs flicker on older dimmers not rated for them.

  • A failing fixture or switch, especially if only one light flickers.

Causes that need a licensed electrician

Loose wiring connections

A loose connection in a switch, fixture, outlet or junction box can arc and heat up. If lights flicker in several rooms or flicker when you bump a wall switch, treat it as a wiring problem.

Heavy appliances starting up

Lights that dim briefly when the air conditioner, dryer or refrigerator starts can mean the circuit is stressed. A brief dip is common, but frequent or deep dimming is worth having checked. See also our guide on breakers that keep tripping.

Problems at the panel or service connection

If lights flicker or brighten and dim across the whole house, the cause may be at the main panel, the meter or the utility connection. This is not a DIY job. Contact your utility if you suspect the problem is outside your home, and a licensed electrician for the panel.

When flickering is dangerous

  • A burning smell, buzzing or crackling from a switch, outlet or fixture. See our guide on a burning smell from an electrical outlet.

  • Warm or discolored switch plates or outlets.

  • Flickering together with tripping breakers or outlets that stopped working.

  • Whole-house flicker that does not stop.

If you notice any of these, turn off the affected circuit at the breaker and call a licensed electrician. If you see smoke or smell something burning strongly, leave the house and call 911.

What not to do

Do not open a switch, fixture, outlet or panel to look for loose wires unless you are qualified. Do not ignore flickering that comes with heat or smell.

Get clarity before the service call

Flickering has many causes with very different costs. A WireWise report looks at your description and photos and explains the probable causes and next steps, so you know whether a bulb swap or an electrician is the right move.

Not sure what is going on with your electrical system? Submit your problem to WireWise and get a written Basic Electrical Diagnostic Report for $29, with probable causes, cost ranges and next steps. It is a first step that helps you know what to ask a licensed electrician. It does not replace an in-person inspection.
